What is Putty?

Putty is an elastic material commonly used in various industries, including manufacturing, oil & gas, medicine, and more. The primary characteristic of putty is its ability to be molded into different shapes and maintain its new form once hardened.

With putty, you can create detailed, accurate, safe, and non-destructive molds (without damaging the object). Below are some examples of how Sylvac Plastiform putty is used in different industries:

  1. Internal complex forms control
  2. Internal simple forms control
  3. External complex forms control
  4. External simple forms control
  5. Roughness control (Ra)
  6. Visual surface finish control
  7. Protection, masking, sealing
  8. Fixing, clamping, adding strength to parts

Advantages of Sylvac Plastiform Putty

Sylvac Plastiform is one of the best putty products commonly used in various industries. Here are seven key advantages:

  1. No Shrinking: The polymerization process, which takes about 6 minutes, does not cause any shrinkage or volume loss.
  2. Micron Accuracy (μm): Sylvac Plastiform replicates all the details of the workpiece (dimensions, shape, surface finish, etc.) with a precision of ±1μm.
  3. Shape Retention Memory: Once solidified, Sylvac Plastiform will return to its original shape even if it experiences temporary distortion.
  4. Non-Stick & No Residue: Sylvac Plastiform can be applied to all types of surfaces (metal, alloys, PVC, wood, plaster, etc.), even underwater, without leaving any residue.
  5. Environmentally Friendly: It is non-toxic and environmentally safe. Sylvac Plastiform products can be handled without special precautions (except for resin products).
  6. Dimensional Stability: The mold will not degrade over time and can be used as a reference for future use.
  7. Environmental Resistance: Sylvac Plastiform is resistant to most chemical, mechanical, and thermal treatments (up to 250°C).

Main Characteristics of Sylvac Plastiform

Each PLASTIFORM® has two main characteristics:

  1. The initial consistency
  2. The final hardness

How to Choose the Right Sylvac Plastiform Product

When selecting a Sylvac Plastiform product, consider the following factors:

A. Choose the Desired Initial Consistency

Sylvac Plastiform offers three product categories with different initial consistencies: liquid, cement, and dough. Here’s a breakdown of each:

1. Liquid Products (SRL)

These have a liquid consistency and can be poured easily, even into very fine details like threads or small holes.

2. Cement Products (SRC)

This type has a non-flowing consistency and is used for sectoral molds (both internal and external). It can be applied to vertical surfaces or the top of a surface.

3. Dough Products (SRD)

With a clay-like consistency, these products are mixed and applied by hand to create external or internal sectoral molds.

B. Choose the Desired Final Hardness Level

1. Flexible (20-40 Shore A)

This flexible or soft hardness falls under the Strong Removal Constraint category (up to 40%). This means that removing the mold from the object after it dries may require extra care to avoid damaging the mold.

To measure the final result, non-contact measurement methods (e.g., optical control, profile projector, laser scan) are recommended, while contact measurements should be avoided.

2. Semi-Flexible (50-70 Shore A)

This semi-flexible hardness falls under the Low Removal Constraint category (up to 20%). It’s easier to remove the mold from the object without significant risk of damage.

For measuring the final result, optical control, profile projector, laser scan, etc., are used, or it can be cut using a Double Blade Cutter.

3. Semi-Rigid and Rigid (80-100 Shore A)

These types are completely rigid and do not have any Removal Constraints. For these, measurements can be taken using both contact and non-contact methods such as calipers, optical control, profile projectors, and laser scans.
