In the world of coating applications, measuring the thickness of coatings on non-metal substrates such as wood, plastic, and concrete has always been a challenge. Traditionally, this task required destructive cross-sectioning methods.
However, with the development of the PosiTector 200, coating thickness measurements have become faster, non-destructive, and more accurate than ever before.
The PosiTector 200 Coating Thickness Gage
The PosiTector 200, from DeFelsko, is a cutting-edge ultrasonic coating thickness gauge, specifically engineered to measure coatings on non-metals.
The PosiTector 200 uses an ultrasonic pulse technique, a method that is now widely accepted and conforms to international standards such as ASTM D-6132, ISO 2808, and SSPC PA17. It has become the go-to solution for many applications, especially where other measurement methods, like magnetic or eddy current, can not be used.
How the PosiTector 200 Coating Thickness Gage Works
The PosiTector 200 utilizes ultrasonic pulse technology to measure coating thickness. When the probe is placed on the coated surface, it sends an ultrasonic pulse through the coating. This pulse reflects off any interface, such as between the coating and substrate or between layers of coating. By analyzing the reflections, the PosiTector 200 can accurately calculate the coating thickness, providing real-time results with exceptional accuracy.
Features of the PosiTector 200 Coating Thickness Gage
The PosiTector 200 is compatible with a variety of probes, each designed to measure different substrate types and coating thicknesses. The system also offers a range of advanced features:
1. Probe Compatibility
The PosiTector 200 can work with 3 different probes, each designed for specific substrates.
- The 200B probe is ideal for thin polymer coatings on wood and plastics.
- The 200C probe is suited for thick coatings on concrete and fiberglass.
- The 200D probe is for very thick coatings like polyurea or asphaltic neoprene.
2. Multi-Layer Measurement
The PosiTector 200 (Advanced model) can measure both total coating thickness and up to 3 individual layer thicknesses in a multi-layer system. It also includes a graphics mode for in-depth analysis of the coating system.
While the PosiTector 200 can potentially identify the thickness of individual paint layers, this depends on the application and the acoustic velocity differences between the primer and paint layers. At the very least, the gauge can measure each layer as it is applied, allowing users to calculate the thickness of the most recent layer.
3. Max Thick Mode
Max Thick Mode is designed to measure total coating thickness, especially on rough or uneven surfaces. It focuses on the deepest, most significant reflections, ignoring surface noise or loud echoes caused by surface roughness. This ensures accurate readings of the total coating thickness at the substrate interface without needing to adjust the instrument’s preset Lo Range.
For the PosiTector 200 Advanced, when multiple layers are selected, this mode reports the thickness of each layer based on the deepest echoes.
Note: Max Thick Mode is not recommended for thin metal substrates or composites like carbon fiber or fiberglass.
Calibration and Operation
To ensure accurate and consistent results, the PosiTector 200 requires calibration. Calibration is performed by DeFelsko or an accredited laboratory and comes with a long-form certificate. Verification should be conducted at the start of each work shift or after any incident where the instrument might have been dropped.
Operating the PosiTector 200 is straightforward. Simply power on the gauge, select your settings, and place the probe onto the coated surface. For most applications, the PosiTector 200 does not require significant adjustments, as it measures most applications accurately right out of the box.
Data Management and Reporting
With the PosiTector 200, managing your measurement data has never been easier. The gauge can save measurements in internal memory, and with the included PosiSoft software, users can easily import their data into a computer to create professional, custom reports. Whether you are connected via USB or Wi-Fi, you can quickly transfer your readings and generate PDF reports for your records.
